My first MBTs; these mary janes work for me and I have chubby feet. I do not find the straps too short and the heel does not slip up and down. I went with my regular shoe size even though I understand most people go a size up. They feel a little tight when standing, but when walking they are like extensions of my feet and feel great. I bought them in Seattle, walked (rolled) out of the store with them on and walked around the city the rest of the day. They did not take any "getting used to." (I had been wearing more fashionable, but still practical shoes and my feet were aching.) A few days later I walked 3.5 miles uphill and downhill in them with no problems. I have suffered from ball of foot pain for for over 2 years. I have been to the podiatrist and to an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in feet. I have had various physical therapies. It is the addition of copper to the alloy that causes the tarnishing. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Copper oxidizes quite easily when exposed to moisture. If it were a ferrous metal (containing iron), we would call it rust.

There are a couple of ways to slow the tarnishing of your sterling silver. You can not eliminate it all together unless you have the piece plated with rhodium (a very non-reactive metal in the platinum group). And, indeed, some manufacturers of sterling silver jewelry are now offering rhodium plated styles. There are also a couple of new alloys of silver that tarnish much more slowly. I love these shoes but there is no arch support at all! I feel my body working in a different way due to the "barefoot technology" but I can also feel my arches, which are high, beginning to stretch and possibly fall. I still wear them almost every day. MBT Blue Lifestyle - Women's I am very happy with these shoes. It takes a little while to get used to the rocking motion, but the shoes actually do force you to walk in a more up-right posture, which is what I hoped. The shoes also have a good arch support. It was almost a month before I received the shoes, and the charge appeared on my credit card immediately, though. As stated in previous reviews, just make sure you order a half-size larger than you normally wear. Sure glad I did!

It's about 22 inches in length (depending on how you trim the skirt) this lure is an absolute MONSTER. Its the biggest lure we run on Bite Me here in Fiji and is in fact even larger than some of our teasers.

When we fish heavy tackle and troll lures for marlin, this is our automatic go to selection for the short corner position. Its a pusher style concave face lure which really punches its way through the water and repeatedly dives well under the prop wash. Its serious weight and length makes it stable in all weather conditions and therefore easy to run. No fiddling about trying to find the working tow height and drop back length just put it where you want it and it will smoke a big and I do mean BIG bubble trail up and down through the wash. Not only is it a screaming grander lure, its also a great big teaser for those days when there are just little blues about.

There is some debate as to what BFG stands for. I believe it stands for Big Friendly Giant though most of my guests, upon seeing it, substitute a rather more colourful word in place of friendly.

Transfer Stations have been in use in the United Kingdom since the 1950s when in Central London the inner city landfill sites, some no larger than bombed out war time sites, became full. Many of these had been filled with ash from small manually loaded and stoked hearth incinerators. Incinerators such as that in the London Borough of Merton had only burnt the residual waste material after extensive hand picking and recycling, and as a result they only needed small landfills - but were superseded by transfer stations which no longer incorporated any recycling facilities at all.

To accommodate the ever larger volumes of unsorted and un-recycled waste it became necessary to transport waste further away to suitable holes in the ground outside the city. Soon the waste had to be transported for more than half an hour, one way, to landfills in the suburbs or the green belt. To have a full gang of men either sitting in the cab of a refuse collection truck (dust cart) or awaiting its return before they could collect more waste from domestic bins was clearly not cost effective. Distances were not great by today's standards but traffic congestion was extensive and transport speeds were as a consequence very low.

As the roads were so poor (no dual carriageways or "clearways" were available in those days in London), the strategy of using a transfer station or depot where waste from the street collection was deposited and transferred into larger "bulk" vehicles, became recognised to be a sensible strategy. People forgot that soon all the suitable holes would become filled up with waste, and largely ignored recycling.

Indeed, in London many of the first transfer stations were river transfer stations (such as Cringle Dock, and Walbrook Dock, and Northumberland Wharf) where waste loaded onto barges was simply initially taken out into the Thames Estuary and dumped at sea. Later, and to this day, these same transfer station sites continue to operate from modernised and extensively updated facilities. Ever since the early 1960s when sea tipping was banned, the river borne waste has been taken by tugs to landfills on the Essex Marshes.

The UK Institute of Waste Management first issued detailed formal guidance to its members on planning and operating transfer stations in 1963, but you will search in vane for any reference to recycling.

The IWM cites two major upheavals in local government structure which occurred which served to spur on the development of transfer stations and the shipping of waste right out of the UK's cities into larger and better controlled landfills.

The first occurred when the Greater London Council (GLC) was formed in 1965 which by pooling the resources of the individual borough councils brought major rationalisation and much needed public investment in more efficient waste handling for disposal in London.

The second took place right across the country, and began in 1974 when larger unitary council authorities were created, and the waste disposal function in England transferred to the County Councils from the individual boroughs. However, as before, the accent as on larger and better engineered landfills, and not minimising waste to preserve the finite capacity of our landfills.

With greater financial and physical resources and also for the first time being able to plan over wider areas the new authorities proudly created larger treatment plants and landfill sites to obtain the benefits of scale.

This era saw for the first time in the United Kingdom the implementation of waste planning strategies based upon the emerging science of waste management including mathematical modelling for site selection on both economic and environmental grounds.

This era which continued until the GLC was abolished by Margaret Thatcher in 1986. For the first time the construction of a new generation of large incineration plants was enabled. A first for London was the large incinerator at Judkins Lane which accepts waste from a number of nearby boroughs. Economy of scale allowed energy recovery with power generation, and many other refuse treatment schemes embodying rail, river and road transportation were implemented for which complex transfer stations were built which remain in use today.

Ironically, very little recycling was done by the GLC although, when abolished, it had been trying to put that right and was investing heavily in Household Waste Recycling Centres. Indeed, the sad fact was that far more recycling had been carried out during, and immediately after the second world war than in the years leading up to our current resurgence of recycling.

In the end it was public opinion which forced our politicians to recognise that society simply has to make best use of the earth's resources, and not squander hard won materials and energy. Recycling has a large role to play in this.

I recently moved to Seoul, South Korea and my in-laws bought these shoes for me. It takes me about 1 hour and ten minutes of subway and street walking. Usually when I get tired my posture goes and my knees start to hurt. These shoes have helped to straighten my posture and TOTALLY get rid of mild knee pain. These shoes also make climbing steps easier. These really make me walk from heel to toe and they really feel good (after I learned who talk walk in them). I experienced a "workout" the first month or two wearing them but the feeling the shoes provide make me prefer them to my normal shoes sometimes. Movement in my feet and knees just feels really smooth. One reservation though. In my opinion these shoes are made for city walking. I would not recommend them for trail walking. I've worn MBTs now for over a year. I walk a mile and half each way to work, and started to get soreness in my knee. I checked out the MBTs, and decided to give it a shot. After the first week of muscle fatigue, I felt the difference. I've been hooked ever sense. I find that my walking and standing stamina is much higher than before. This particular model is my 2nd pair, and I like it more than my first. My main issue with many of the MBT models is that they are not very attractive. This one though has gotten compliments from an assorted set of folks, and looks good enough that it can go with a business casual look. It also seems to be better at handling rain than my previous pair, which was a micro-suede. That one became discolored after a while and was strictly a casual shoe after a short while. This model has been great, and my wife also bought a pair now has joined the MBT world. This is a great sneaker that lives up to it's word. However, you must absolutly buy a larger size because these shoes run SMALL! One half size larger will work for you. I had to return my original order in exchange for a larger size, and that was a bit of a hassel.

OK, so we know that if you tow just about anything around behind a game fishing boat in the South Pacific, eventually, a blue marlin is going to take a look and have a go.

That being said, most of us dont have the time nor the inclination to spend a week trolling a pineapple wrapped in tinfoil just to see what happens.

Guests going fishing aboard Bite Me rely on the crew to assess the conditions, select the best areas, find the bait and troll the lures most likely to raise a blue.

Over the years we have tried and tested a wide variety of lures and have established a fairly productive spread which forms the basis of any blue marlin hunt.

We usually start off with the basics and then tweak this to match the prevailing conditions or swap one or more lures to cover all our bases, i.e. run lures that simulate the baitfish we believe the marlin are hunting.

Say, for example you are out trolling on the Kadavu trench and you come across a school of skipjack tuna feeding on the surface.

We would immediately check to make sure we had at least one lure out that imitates a wounded skipjack. Its a big empty ocean. Any marlin in the area is going to be focused on the skipjack and will probably ignore everything else.

Match the hatch as the freshwater fly fishermen are fond of saying. Its just as appropriate to hunting marlin as when casting flies to a brown trout.

The following is a sample of our basic starting blue marlin lure spread from left to right):

I have laid them out in roughly the usual positions. The smaller lures on either side usually work best and are most productive when run from the outriggers. The larger lures in the centre are usually run from the corners, closer in to the transom.

This spread works well for us in Fiji and has accounted for numerous blues. We do of course have a large selection of other lures aboard our gamefishing vessels but you have to start somewhere. We vary colours a little throughout the year according to the baitfish present and are happy to take 'lure requests' from angling guests but as a starting point the above spread will have you off on the right track.

What is interesting about the fashion world in general and NYC fashion in particular is the fact that it has virtually always been dominated by women. I bought these shoes in October because I was absolutely desperate for a pair of shoes I could wear to comfortably walk around New York City during an upcoming trip. My feet hurt all the time - like another reviewer, I am also overweight and any shoe has just been unbearable to stand in for any extended length of time. As soon as I tried on this MBT, I knew it was for me. I immediately felt as though I had no weight on my feet at all. The rocking motion did take a few moments to get used to but I loved the shoe so much, I wore it out of the store and I have not wanted to take it off since. I had no trouble keeping with my friends in New York and no trouble going up and down subway steps either. The only issues I have are 1) why are some MBT's $300 and other $100? They seem to have the same built in technology. 2) After 4 months of wear, although the shoes are still extremely comfortable, I'm concerned that they have already flattened out and no longer have that rocking motion. I'm not happy about the fact that I paid $300 for these shoes and that the technology used in making the shoes doesn't last longer than that. However, I still love them and wear them every day and feel resentful when I have to put soemthing els eon my feet.

I ordered these becasue I've heard such good things about them from other wearers. Didn't take long for me to break in, but once I got going, I quickly started feeling the burn in the upper thighs and calf area. One to caution..this shoe does run small. I normally wear a size 11 in women shoes, but becasue of the rocking motion backwards, my toes rammed into the front of the shoe quite often. I would suggest for women who wear an 11 to go with a Men's size 9.5 for more room. Otherwise, was quite satisfied with my purchase

These shoes are AMAZING. I'm 57, 50# overweight and work at a hospital where I put in six 12 hour shifts, then have 8 days off. On hard floors I average 6-8 miles of walking a night. I have one flat foot and one with a good arch. My flat foot starts to ache about 1/2 way through the shift. So I and others in this profession have tried just about every new idea that comes down the pike. Z-coils worked well but eventually I settled in to Crocs because of their comfort & coolness- you can take them off easily and so when you sit you can slip out of them and let your feet cool off. But then several of us tried MBTs. I couldn't believe it- no pain in my feet whatsoever, even after long shifts. I found myself on my feet more and moving around. I guess some folk take a few tries at them before they get used to them but I found the day I bought them I could float around in them without any mishap. They do feel different- all your weight seems to be centered in the middle of your foot- kind of a rocker feeling which forces you to keep your balance. Not a shoe to run in but for standing & walking they seem to be the best shoe out there. Until something better comes along I'll be wearing these while I work and at home whenever I'm on my feet for a long time.
